Multimedia 2011-2012

Loyalist POM was lucky to have Randy Risling from the Toronto Star as the judge for the multimedia category of the 2011-2012 school year.

FIRST PLACE

1. Rachel Psutka - Just Josh

Judge's Comments:
- this piece has a great intro
- although there is nothing visually stunning about it, the story, message, and subject are what makes this the winner.
- this piece also has the best audio (even though it is over modulated in places)
- it could be tightened up to be even stronger but overall a good piece.
- Although the audio is slightly over modulated, the main interview is nice and clear

SECOND PLACE

2. Patrick Callbeck - Cooper

Judge's Comments:
- this piece has the best technical properties but the story is not as strong.
- The wall-to-wall talking in this piece feels like it could use a couple short breaks to make a stronger story.
- Patrick probably knows this already but the few hand-held shots are REALLY shaky.
- Great overall look to this piece!

THIRD PLACE

3. Marta Iwanek - Don't Want to Miss a Thing

Judge's Comments:
- this is really well executed Marta. It's a great perspective on a common topic.
- I like the fact that you break it up into different segments. I don't like that you use a dip-to-black to break it up though.
- The only other thing that really bothers me is when Bridget is talking for the main voice and you also have her talking in the b-roll. That can get confusing.

HONOURABLE MENTION

4. Linda Horn - Para Cadets

Judge's Comments:
- I think Linda had the best visuals but the audio and the edit were a little rough.

General thoughts and observations:
- I liked the pace of most of the pieces. Nothing really dragged out or felt too short.
- What kind of training are you getting on audio? To be brutally honest, I was shocked at the quality of audio on most of the pieces. Audio can make or break a piece for me.
- I'm not surprised at the amount of shaky shots that should have been on a tripod.
- Besides audio, the one thing I noticed that drove me crazy (this is personal preference) is the amount of dip-to-black transitions!!! Is it a coincidence that ever single piece has a dip-to-black in it or is that something that you were taught to do?

Points awarded
